REPAIR INDUSTRIAL WHARF AT LOS ANGELES-LONG BEACH
Los Angeles-Long Beach, San Pedro, CA
This waterfront wood wharf repair project included the removal of PVC pile wraps, cleaning of the pile, and inspection of pile upon wrap removal at the USCG Base Los Angeles/Long Beach. Additional repairs included long post repair, installation of epoxy jacket repair, removal of existing failed mooring bollard, and furnishing and installation of a replacement bollard.
A complete inspection of the wharf was performed by professional divers using underwater video. Diving operations were closely monitored for safety. The inspection confirmed that several piles needed to be re-wrapped and more piles needed repairs. The repairs varied and included loosened fender pile hardware, rock obstructions, busted rivets, concrete debris on the seabed, and full replacement of the fender piles. During inspection of all wharf piles, numerous piles that were outside of CJW’s scope of work were found without protective pile wrap. As a result, these piles had heavy marine growth and deterioration. CJW worked with the USCG to include cleaning, inspection, and addition of protective pile wrap to the project. In addition, heavy debris was encountered along the seafloor of the piles. This debris included wire rope, large rocks, PVC pipe, metal, plastic, and heavy chains. In order to complete the repair work, CJW excavated heavy debris and mud from the seafloor. |
